The handling techniques Northwest has developed include a "conditioning" program for the last few weeks before sale. This trains the oysters to remain closed and sealed for as long as possible and if stored properly remain alive up to 14 days.

 These mussels are different from native mussels (Mytilus trossulis) which grow on pylons or rocks. We grow two types of mussels to ensure a constant supply; they have alternate spawning times so when one is spawning the other is available. Edulis spawn in summer months from July to September.
